Introducing Sitting Firm at Gaze Burvill

We are excited to introduce you to Sitting Firm at Gaze Burvill, launching a collection of beautiful craftsman-made contemporary interior furniture.

Based entirely in our Hampshire workshop, they oversee every part of the process, from managing seasoned wood boards arriving from local sustainably managed woodlands, the complex shaping of the chair’s solid wood seat base, wood turning and steam-bending, to hand-finishing the seats. Much of the Ash timber used comes from within a mile or so of the workshop. Everything is made and finished on site in Hampshire.

Their comfortable, strong and long-lasting chairs have a timeless appeal, to suit either a modern or more traditional space. Conceived in the forests, which provided plentiful raw material, Windsor Chairs used to be made in the woodland by lone craftsmen in a process honed through centuries, before production moved into larger workshops.

Sitting Firm at Gaze Burvill is one of a small number of places in this country where the skills required to make these pieces survive and are being passed on, respecting the older craft tradition. It marks a key chapter in our country’s furniture-making story.

Sitting Firm at Gaze Burvill is dedicated to creating a future of innovative, sustainable designs that conserve the heritage of British craftsmanship, while also embracing the 21st Century capabilities of CNC technology. The native hardwoods chosen are sourced from the UK, often very locally, always from sustainably managed, productive woodlands. A collection of beautiful contemporary tables complements the Windsor Chair collection.

Master craftsman Dave Green launched Sitting Firm in 1989, and established a reputation for the highest standards in Windsor Chair making. As he sought to work less, outdoor furniture specialists Gaze Burvill took on the production of Sitting Firm.
